NHHRC Media Release 16 February 2009

A Healthier Future for all Australians

Interim Report of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission

The Interim Report of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (NHHRC) – A Healthier Future for all Australians – was released today at the National Press Club in Canberra.

NHHRC Chair, Dr Christine Bennett, said the report reflects the Commission’s thinking on the challenges facing the health system now and into the future, and suggests reform directions to meet those challenges.

The report proposes 116 reform directions across the spectrum of health service delivery from a healthy start to life to end of life care – covering a range of issues including governance of the health system, primary health care, prevention, Indigenous health, hospitals, aged care, workforce, mental health, and rural health.

“This is an Interim Report and is a work in progress,” Dr Bennett said.

“We recognise that we are further advanced in some areas of focus than others. In some instances, we have presented options recognising our work to date will benefit from further discussion and feedback.

“The report canvasses some important ideas, reform directions and options that will stimulate debate in government, in the health sector, and in the community.

“The response and feedback we receive to this report will be of immense benefit as we prepare our final report over the coming months.

“We look forward to a thoughtful and intelligent discussion in the Australian community about the future of our health system,” Dr Bennett said.

The report presents the Commission’s reform agenda under four themes, which are:
    Taking responsibility: individual and collective action to build good health and wellbeing – by people, families, communities, health professionals, employers and governments;
    Connecting care: comprehensive care for people over their lifetime;
    Facing inequities: recognise and tackle the causes and impacts of health inequities; and
    Driving quality performance: better use of people, resources, and evolving knowledge.
